International
Women’s Day (IWD) group is a non-profit organisation
working to celebrate and support the diversity and achievements
of women. This is done through the arts, workshops, talks,
networking, debate, participating projects and organisations.
IWD has been celebrated on 8th March since the early 1900s
and is now recognised in more than 80 countries. It offers
an opportunity for change taking into account the social,
cultural, economic and political issues that concern women
today. Women have celebrated this day in Brighton and Hove
for nearly 20 years.
To celebrate IWD
in Brighton & Hove 2008, a week of events
have been co-ordinated:
THURSDAY 6th MARCH
Wonderful Women Stand-Up
8.00pm – 11.00pm upstairs at Hare and Hounds (Preston
Circus).
A night of new and established female comedians

SATURDAY 8th MARCH
Million Women Rise march
Breakfast send off 8.00am-10.00am Red Roaster, StJames’
Street.
Breakfast refreshments on sale at local café to support
women who are travelling to London
to attend the Million Women Rise march.

The Womens Refuge Project are arranging for women only coaches

Drop-in session staffed by IWD volunteers offering information
about IWD,
BWC and other local women’s organisations. Tea and coffee

IWD Celebration Disco
A disco with female DJ celebrating the end of a week of events
for IWD.

Community event
The IWD planning group are also hosting a community event
for Women and Children
at Hove Town Hall. This will feature entertainment, stalls
and food.

The Black and Minority Ethnic
Community Partnershiphave organised a IWD event
at the Brighthelm Church andCommunity Centre for Saturday
15th March 2008.
This women only event will run from 1-6 and feature food,
stories,
entertainment and information. There is a creche available.
